Oregon Governor Mark Hatfield talks with astronaut Walter Cunningham during a spacesuit test at Bend, Oregon, on August 25, 1964.

There are quite a few sites in central Oregon that were visited by the astronauts in the 60's. I think this one is Lava Butte south of Bend on Highway 97.

I've explored around that area and believe me it's rough going.

Any idea what the pressure suit is under the over-garment? Mercury or Gemini? The photo is dated inbetween both programs, so I guess it could be either.

It looks like a Gemini helmet and white Gemini suit. Also looks like a PLSS mockup creating the hump under the jacket. First time I've seen a photo of the jacket (over-garment). What's the story on it?

That really reminds me of the lunar oversuit used in the movie Countdown.

Is an experimental Apollo suit, the Hamilton Standard A1H test suit, with removable thermal overgarnment.

Good observation, however it is different than the A1H suit.

The suit is an A2L spacesuit which is a later model than the A1H. ILC made three A2L suits directly under contract to NASA for training purposes, as opposed to the ones they made under conract to Hamilton Standard (A1H, A2H, A3H). The visor control knob, lack of a feed port, upper chest strap configuration, and the spacing and orientation of the O2 hoses indicates this is an A2L suit.

A great photo showing an early TMG overgarment configuration. All early Apollo suit designs used a separate TMG overgarment until the Apollo 1 fire resulted in the TMG being integrated onto the suit for fire protection. This resulted in the A7L suit. Had the fire not happened, the lunar landing missions would have used spacesuits with a separate TMG overgarment. Thanks for sharing the photo.
