Actress Julie Andrews is talking to Chris Kraft, then Deputy Director of the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston, during a visit together with her husband, director Blake Edwards, on July 2, 1970.

I've met both of them! ... and was actually on stage with Julie Andrews at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall.

Was it a special occasion that Andrews and Edwards visited MSC in meeting deputy director Kraft? Or, perhaps, the couple were in Houston and wanted to visit/tour the space center in Texas when the Apollo program was at its peak?

It was probably a private visit. There are many photos of VIP visits to MSC (or other NASA centers for that matter). It was probably a combination of genuine interest in the space program and an opportunity for 'being seen'.

"Surely Mr. Kraft, they cannot seriously be thinking of cancelling Apollo 18 and 19?"

"Yes Ma'am; I'm afraid so ..."

(She breaks out in song).

Two things:
  1. ilbasso - very cool; tell us a little about that.

  2. Delta7 - yes, but what song? The shuttle had "SS Columbia", there was even a "High Calypso", but what IS the Apollo song? Anyone?

"Fly Me to the Moon"

Regarding Julie Andrews: I sang with the National Symphony Orchestra Pops at the Kennedy Center's Spring Gala in April 2005. Marvin Hamlisch was an absolute b**tard to work with, but it was a fun show nonetheless. Julie Andrews was one of the hosts. Unfortunately, this was after the operation that ended her singing career, although I can truly say that we were on the stage at the same time! I did get to perform (as a chorister) with Barbara Cook, Irish tenor John McDermott, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Elaine Stritch, and Frederica Von Stade.

Serious look. They were probably talking about Apollo 13.
