Astronaut Al Shepard and comedian Bill Dana have some fun at the memorial service for Deke Slayton in the Teague Auditorium at JSC on June 18, 1993. Shepard is wearing his 'interoccular correction device', as he called it. At right is NASA Administrator Dan Goldin and at left is cosmonaut Alexei Leonov. Ed Hengeveld |

Bill Dana was on "The Steve Allen Show" during the 1959-60 season. Then had his own show, "The Bill Dana Show" from 1963-65. He played Jose Jimenez on both shows. |

I was in the audience for that! Little did we all know that we'd be back there in what seemed like just a few months (albeit 5 years), for Al's memorial...I don't remember much of the banter, but I do remember part of the talk by Dusty Dowd, one of Deke's air racing friends. Dusty was always bugging Deke to make a preflight checklist for Deke's racer. Being of the "right stuff", Deke never thought he needed one. Then one day, Deke took off in his racer and just a few feet off the ground the engine sputtered, then caught again, and Deke went on with his flight. When Dusty asked Deke about it afterward, Deke said that he had forgotten to turn on the fuel tank shutoff valve (so the engine only had whatever fuel was in the carburetor and lines, e.g - enough to get a few feet off the ground), discovered his problem when the engine sputtered, and flipped the valve open. Dusty ended the story with Deke muttering "I guess I need a $%^&ing checklist.". |

I remember Ed Sullivan asking if the helmet Jose was holding was his 'crash helmet', and Jose said "Oh I hope not!" Also, he was asked what he was going to do during his flight. He answered "Cry a lot." |

And from the intro to one of the episodes in FTETTM: "Sir, you seem ill-equipped for this type of endevour." "What do you mean? I have gloves and everything." | |
