The gantry is about to be pulled back from the Mercury-Atlas 7 combination in the early morning hours of May 24, 1962, before the launch of Scott Carpenter aboard Aurora 7.

Stunning lighting and shadows! And the engineers on the pad provide both a sense of scale and anticipation.

Nice picture. What a day that was! I turned 13 years old that day and convinced my mother to let me skip school to watch the whole thing, which I did and hung on every word.
