Test pilot and future astronaut Joe Engle gets a kiss from his wife Mary at Edwards Air Force Base in California after flying the X-15 rocket ship to an altitude of 53 miles on June 25, 1965. The flight made the Air Force captain the 12th American to qualify for pilot-astronaut rating by exceeding 50 miles altitude. Ed Hengeveld |

"Hello Darling, how was your day?" "Swell." "You know Mr. Slayton said if things keep going the way they are, I might be seeing that Apollo 17 slot sooner than I thought." "Oh darling, that's wonderful, I always knew you could do it." PS: Are they still married? I hope so. |

His wife Mary passed away some years ago, and he has since remarried. |

Maybe because they didn't have any decent heat resistant paint yet in that shade of blue (likely they just had white, yellow and red). |

Looking through a file tonight for something else I came across this photo of Joe and Mary Engle I took on the flight line at Edwards in front of a mockup of the X-15. Behind them was the B-52 used to drop the X-15s, I was told. This was taken at an event in 1999, as I recall, celebrating the X-15 program and attended by Engle, Crossfield, Dana and Knight, who were all lined up in front of the X-15 with their wives at the time of this photo. Probably taken pretty close to the place the 1965 photo above was taken. |

Thanks, Ed. When I came across it I was struck by the similarity with that older photo. |
