Crewmembers Glenn Kingsley (left) and Joe Gagliano are suiting up for a test of lunar module LTA-8 in the vacuum chamber at the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston in May 1968.

Joe Gagliano was a veteran from MSC’s Flight Crew Support Division, who had also been involved in the CSM-008 vacuum chamber tests in 1966. Kingsley was one of a group of Grumman consulting pilots, who performed astronaut duties for tests where astronauts were unavailable.

Ed, thanks for the explanation. Both guys seem to be involved in a serious telepathic discussion.

Joe: Can you hear me now?

Glenn: Wha...What?

Joe: can-you-hear-me?

Glenn: What?? cannot hear you with the helmet on.

(well, I thought its humourous)

Joe: Since it's similar to my first name, I'm signing the crew photo as Jim, you get to sign John's name.

Glenn: You get to be Irwin again?! That's bull!

Joe: No, you're Bull.

Funny, when I first looked at it I thought of Wally's old joke about the American and Russian craft both landing on the moon at the same time.

The astronaut and the cosmonaut bounce over to each other and click their helmets together and say,

"Hello Hanz"

"Hello Fritz"

"Vee both speak Zerman now!"

Now that's an informative picture.
It makes sense, but I never even thought about it before - Astronaut stand-ins.

Glenn Kingsley passed away on January 4, 2011. I had the pleasure of knowing him through our state's Master Gardener program. He was a Friend of Master Gardeners, and his wife, Jane, remains an active certified Master Gardener and weekly volunteer in our office.

Glennon Mead Kingsley, II — or Mr. K, as he was known to many of us — was a fine fellow who enjoyed line dancing and telling stories of his many life-adventures, including his years with Grumman Aerospace and time spent in Iran.

All times are CT (US)
