Forty years ago today, the Apollo 11 astronauts photographed this view of earthrise from lunar orbit. The crew and the docked CSM-LM combination were preparing for the historic events of the next day.

Can anybody inform me, please, if this is the orientation view the Apollo 11 team would see?

I know that the famous Earthrise seen from Apollo 8 is correctly displayed with the lunar surface on the right. I wondered if the same orientation would apply here?

What a beautiful picture and thanks to Ed for bringing it to our attention at this most appropriate time.

The correct orientation depends on how the photo was taken. I know that Bill Anders said the lunar surface should be on the right, because that is how he took the picture. In this Apollo 11 view the north pole is to the right, so the correct orientation should be the same as the Apollo 8 photo. But I don't know if it was taken that way.
