I had always thought that there was no photo of the original Apollo 8 crew in spacesuits, but John Charles proved me wrong. Shown here in March 1968, astronauts Anders, Collins and Borman are checking out their spacecraft at North American. Collins was later removed from the crew to undergo surgery and was replaced by Lovell. Thanks John!

Any opinions as to what kind of suit Collins is wearing? As CMP, his suit should have a single set of chest connectors, on the right-hand side of the suit (e.g., like Lovell's suit in S68-50265). But, Collins has a set on the left-hand side.

My first thought was that the picture was reversed when scanned, but the red wrist connector is properly on the right-hand side of the suit.

Note that the same is true for Eisele's early A7L suit as photographed in January 1968, in 68-HC-225 (sorry, I cannot post the photo nor find it via Google), and for Scott's A6L suit circa late 1966.

If the list below is in the right sequence, isn't the photo above an original Apollo 9 crew photo? Wasn't Collins replaced before 9 became 8?
  • POTW Anders-Collins-Borman in March 1968
  • CMP switch Collins-Lovell
  • Borman crew mission assignment change

In the McDivitt crew photo, the black strips seen on the left shoulders of the suits are name tags.

All times are CT (US)
