As the Enterprise is trucked from the Rockwell plant in Palmdale to Edwards Air Force Base on January 31, 1977, two former astronauts discuss future Shuttle operations at the base. General Tom Stafford was commander of the Air Force Flight Test Center at Edwards, while Dave Scott was Director of the adjacent NASA Flight Research Center.

Imagine being the truck driver. For the rest of your life, you get to tell everyone that you "drove" the Space Shuttle.

'Well Dave, don't you worry. Security is pretty tight here - no one would be able to walk in and steal a Shuttle'

This photo (and any others like it) make the Matchbox toys I played with as a kid all that much cooler. As a child, I always thought there was something wrong with having a truck pulling a space shuttle... little did I know (although they never did get the scale between the truck and orbiter quite correct).

"Ya know, Dave, looking at all that cactus out there, maybe I'll just hold it in until we get to Edwards. But don't let me stop you; I'll wait in the car!"

"Speeding, officer? In this little thing? Heck, this Shuttle doesn't do more than 225 miles per hour... uh, oh."

Does anyone else think that Tom and Dave are a bit overdressed for the desert?

Another time, another place, but this quote is somehow appropriate for the photo and dedicated to all who believed Enterprise would fly in space:

"Why don't you fix your little problem and light this candle?"

All times are CT (US)
