Apollo 12 astronauts Pete Conrad (left) and Al Bean practice the EVA portion of their flight on a simulated lunar landscape near JSC. At right is CapCom Ed Gibson participating in the simulation. Ed Hengeveld |

I've always wondered, were the backpacks used in training scenarios like this one identical to the backpacks worn on the moon?I would think the engineers would try to lighten them up a bit, but I've never read anything mentioning it. - Paul |

This picture was clearly not taken on the set where they faked the Apollo 12 landing... ------------------ John Capobianco Camden DE |

If you look very closely at the right hand area of this photo you'll see there's a guy in red shirt. I analyzed an enhanced version of this image in extremely high resolution using advanced image processing software and it's clear that the guy is not wearing a helmet! on the moon!Plus you can just about make out the lunar rover parked to the left of the LEM... but this is supposed to be Apollo 12! Clearly NASA filmed all the fake moon landings at the same time (to save money) and forgot about the rover in this shot. Conclusive proof that NASA faked the whole thing! |

For what it's worth, I came across this brief item in Aviation Week, Aug. 22, 1966: "First US astronauts to explore the lunar surface will wear red helmets so that they may be more easily observed from the moon-orbiting command module and by each other." This explains why Bean's lunar EVA helmet was red (as was Conrad's under its fabric cover), as was Schweickart's and Scott's on Apollo 9, and (I believe) all the others. ------------------ John Charles Houston, Texas |

I always thought Schweickart's helmet was a tip to his red hair (and an easy way to identify him). |
