In March 1978 NASA named the first four Space Shuttle flight crews for the orbital flight test (OFT) phase. This is the crew of OFT-4, Vance Brand (right) and Gordon Fullerton, during emergency egress training at JSC in August 1978. The crews were later reshuffled and Fullerton was assigned to STS-3 and Brand to STS-5.

Funny V. Brand looks somewhat like Harrison Ford (in the firs opus of the Indiana Jones saga).

It's hard to imagine that we went 6 years without manned spaceflight. In a sense, I'm not looking forward to 2010.

When they were a crew, who was the CDR? Was it Fullerton, who at that stage had not flown in space, or Brand, who had with the ASTP?

The original OFT crew assignments announced March 1978:

Young/Crippen
Engle/Truly
Haise/Lousma
Brand/Fullerton

The plan at the time was for as many as 7 OFT missions, with each crew flying in the sequence shown above.

Fred Haise left NASA to pursue other opportunities in 1979; Lousma was promoted to CDR. The new lineup:

Young/Crippen
Engle/Truly
Lousma/Fullerton
Brand/Overmyer.

At some point, the crew of Mattingly/Hartsfield was added and eventually assigned to STS-4. Brand/Overmyer wound up on the first operational flight, along with MS's Allen & Lenoir.

That crossed my mind, too. So did John Denver.

Actually Brand has the "look and feel" of the 70s and I wonder if he didn't remind me of the TV serie "Space:1999"...
