The ascent stage of the LM Spider, with astronauts Jim McDivitt and Rusty Schweickart aboard, approaches the CSM Gumdrop, from where Dave Scott took this photo. Spider had just returned from the first manned test flight of the lunar lander in earth orbit during Apollo-9 in March 1969. Has it really been 39 years already? Ed Hengeveld |

One of my favorite missions (since I saw Apollo 9 on the pad as a kid in Feb 1969). Pretty neat that the Ascent Stage of Spider stayed in orbit until 23 October 1981. If only the Shuttle could have grabbed it... |

Another winner Ed! Great shot from an oft-overlooked mission. |

Great photo! Sure gives you the impression how fragile the skin of the LEM was....------------------ Evan |

Best photo I've seen regarding how fragile the LEM would be this one (based upon a very similar shot in D.W. Reynolds, "Apollo, The Epic Journey to the Moon" p. 212 [an amazing book, by the way!], where you can see Cernan through the LEM window): AS17-149-22859 quote: View of the Lunar Module "Challenger" in lunar orbit before rendezvous with the Apollo 17 Command/Service Modules.
