This rare photo is an inflight crew portrait taken during Shuttle mission STS-51J in 1985. Shown are astronauts Bobko, Hilmers, Grabe, Pailes and Stewart. Because 51J was a dedicated DoD mission no onboard photos were released, just like mission STS-51C earlier that year. This one (and more) surfaced many years later.

Thanks, Ed. This made my morning. I had only seen one other photo from the mission and it was the DSCS III pair/IUS. Today's photo really puts a nice human touch to the mission.

I have an idea for a future CD - a "Secret Shuttles", if you will. Combine all known inflight photos from STS-51C, 51J, 27, 28, 33, 36, 38, etc.

Only a couple more years until automatic downgrading of TS and I suppose most of the materials from the 51J mission will be fair game for FOIA ?

If you are able to get a hold of the February 1997 issue of Spaceflight Magazine it has a section called "Crew members who missed the limelight". There about six photo's of Bill Pailes in there from this mission.

All times are CT (US)
