This image of the Space Shuttle Atlantis backdropped over a desert was photographed by the Expedition-1 crew aboard the International Space Station shortly after the STS-98 crew undocked from the station on February 16, 2001. Ed Hengeveld |

I heard the shuttle described as a butterfly on the back of a firework, a much better description, IMO. |

Rob, I think that might have been Story Musgrave. Not too sure about the firework, but he definitely talked about the shuttle being a butterfly mounted on something powerful.Colin |

Hi Colin,I think it was a shuttle astronaut, it was a comment made from a documentary I saw on the TV. Like you say it was a butterfly on the back of something powerful. |

I believe it was in that 1995 shuttle documentary made by Aussie Scott Hicks, and I did find the exact words spoken by Story in discussing the Challenger tragedy. His exact words were "a butterfly riding on a rocket." |
