Astronaut Gordon Cooper assumed the role of spacecraft commander during vibration testing of Apollo command module 105 in April 1968. The test took place at the Manned Spacecraft Center's vibration and acoustic test facility in Building 39. Cooper was to determine the reaction of astronauts to the severe vertical oscillations recorded on Apollo-6. Instrumented dummies occupied the remaining two seats.

I worked with a gentleman at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston who worked on this test. He was with NASA at JSC at the time. He told me over coffee one day that when the vibrations got too rough, Cooper came flying out of the capsule and stared up at the Launch Escape Tower. Apparently Cooper was certain that the tower was going to topple over. The crew was surprised at how fast he was able to exit the Command Module.

Very interesting observation, thanks. I understand from an article in Aviation Week that Cooper found the vibrations totally unacceptable and the test was terminated the day it started.
