Astronaut C.C. Williams is seen sitting in the pilot seat of the Gemini-10 spacecraft during training as a backup for that mission, which was eventually flown by prime crew John Young and Mike Collins in July 1966. Williams was killed in a T-38 crash in October 1967.

In conducting my research for "Fallen Astronauts" with CC's family and those who knew him best, there was a reassuringly common consensus that he was one of the nicest and most proficient and popular guys around the astronaut office, a dedicated Marine, and a highly-motivated pilot who was really looking forward to that first mission. He hated the "bachelor astronaut" tag applied to him when he was selected, as well as the playboy image that contemporary press articles educed, when in fact he was a one-gal guy and very much in love with his Beth, whom he married soon after his Panama jungle training.

Had he not died in that T-38 crash, a tad over two years later he would have walked on the moon with Pete Conrad, as the fourth man to do so.

I love the wistful look on his face in this photograph - it's a great shot, Ed; thank you.

Great photo! Started to read a little about C.C. (a little refresher) and noticed that the official NASA bio for him is inacurate (http://www.jsc.nasa.gov/Bios/htmlbios/williams-cc.html), it said his wife's name was Jane (his daughters name), and only mentions that he has one child. Anyone know who to email to change it?
cheers,
Helen

Wow...it appears they have touched his bio since he died in 1967.

Another wonderful shot, Ed. Thanks again. Also, I now have a copy of Colin's book, but it's waiting under the Christmas tree to be opened. This is one more reason to really look forward to it.

As I know, was the name of his wife Jane E. Lansche and of his daughter Catherine Ann. I do know, that they had a second child. Any name and birthday of this child known by someone?

( dss65 ) Don take it from me Colins book is a cracking good read hope you enjoy it over the holiday season.
Thanks again for the photo Ed,
Was Al Bean the other member of the G-10 BU crew ?? correct me if I'm wrong over this.
I remember Dick Gordon when he came over to the UK the other year telling me that he still thinks of " Ol CC " fondly.
have a good weekend

That's right, Ian. Al Bean was C.C.'s commander on the Gemini-10 backup crew.

You will have to take my word for it. Bean is on the right, with Williams on the left, during a rehearsal on July 13, 1966.

Ed (as always) great photos on this thread. Do you know if there are any photos of the original Gemini 9 crew (See / Bassett) while training for their flight?
Thanks.

Helen, CC's wife was the former Beth Lansche. They had two daughters; the first was Catherine Ann, born 6 January 1967. The second was Jane Dee, born 31 May 1968, seven months after CC died. Beth Williams never remarried, and todaty is a highly successful businesswoman in Houston. She still loves and misses CC enormously, and told me that she and the girls talk to him regularly just as if he was still part of the family, to keep him informed about what he's missing out on.
