With a long day ahead, astronaut Jim Irwin (in spacesuit at left) and Joe Gagliano of NASA crew support prepare to enter Grumman's Internal Environment Simulator, where they will test the LM life support system. This was done in preparation for the LTA-8 testing at JSC in 1968. Irwin waits for technician Bill Eveland to finish preparing Gagliano, as assistant test director Harold Bell (left) and chamber operator Vic Peckenschneider look on. The photo is dated March 22, 1968. Ed Hengeveld |

Mike, I belive that was taken at Grumman in Bethpage. My uncle worked on the LM in the 60's and I remember seeing that photo (or one very similar) in a Grumman newsletter. Great shot, Ed! Tom |

Tom is right: the photo came from the Grumman files and I was able to identify the test personnel from the caption in the Grumman newsletter.Ed |

Isn't it amazing that it seems to take 7 people to change a light bulb with space work. There's always 2 people doing the job and 5 others watching. |

When a mistake would probably be the cause of my death, a few dozen people watching to prevent errors would be most welcome. ------------------ John Fongheiser President Historic Space Systems, http://www.space1.com |

They don't look like they're preventing errors to me. |

I know you're probably joking with your comments, but I'll reply in case there are people who really have this opinion. It's easy to make assumptions based on a photo. For all we know, everyone pictured here had a role to play once the simulation began and were photographed simply waiting for the astronauts to get ready. It's also possible that some of these people were observers attending on behalf of the contractors who made parts for the life support system. If their job was nothing more than to get feedback from the simulation in order to improve the equipment, their role should not be downplayed. If we all had photographers following us around during our own workdays and they happened to take our photo at a time when we're being unproductive (taking a coffee break...or posting to CS ), someone viewing that photo might assume we aren't doing any real work either. Besides, note that Jim Irwin is one of the guys "watching" in this photo. Yet, I can think we can all agree that he was quite busy a few moments later. The same can probably be said for everyone else in the photo. [Edited by mjanovec (November 22, 2006).] |
