Thought you might enjoy this: the Carpenter family listen as Scott is describing his three-orbit mission during a press conference after his return to Cape Canaveral on May 27, 1962. In the front row are Carpenter's mother, children Jay, Kris and Scott and his wife Rene. In the background are astronauts Cooper, Shepard, Glenn and several astronaut wives.

Kris,

You look a little angry (or bored)!

Kris is actually holding a very small notepad cupped in her left hand and a very short pencil in her right; researching even back then

Cheers,
Matt

Wow, Ed!!

I haven't seen that photo in decades. I think it's a NASA photo. I have a framed LIFE photo of the same event--of me in profile, chin on my chest, asleep.

O, the ignominy. Asleep at the MA-7 press conference, when I should have been taking notes!

I accept that I may have been cross as heat and stupefaction both overcame me.

I remember it was very hot in the press tent.

The lineup from left to right in that front row is Trudy Cooper, Florence Noxon Carpenter (my grandmother), Jay, me, Scotty, and Rene Carpenter.

I think there's a transcript of the press conference. I did not have it to refer to while writing For Spacious Skies. Anyone here know where I can find a copy??

In the enlarged photo one can see, I am almost certain, the face of Kentie Slayton a few rows back. My younger sister Candy is likely sitting next to him with Marje Slayton, an arrangement they may have insisted on, as they were inseparable playmates at Langley.

Thanks so much for the picture, Ed. It made my day.

Oh, and . . .

That's John and Annie Glenn, directly behind Rene. And Marje Slayton, in the white headband. Candy must be in the seat next to her.
