Apparently a soccer fan, astronaut John Blaha appears to be having a ball (pun intended) aboard the Shuttle Discovery during mission STS-33 in November 1989. Ed Hengeveld |

Yeah. And it's still going on today. And rugby is for collitch boy wannabes. Do you honestly think PADS make guys like Eugene "Big Daddy" Lipscomb tough? This was a man who used to run the streets with Sonny Liston LOOKING for cops (proper grammar ahead!) with whom to beef. When asked about his technique, Big Daddy said, "I just grab a handful of guys and sort them out until I find the one with the ball." There are others from back in the days when training consisted of cutting beer intake: Lou "The Toe" Groza, Jim Katkavage, Sam Huff, Jim Brown - famous for once gaining 15 yards with three tacklers hanging from him - Dick Butkus, Ray Nitzchke, Karl Kassulke, Andy Robustelli, Roosevelt Greer, Norm Van Brocklin, Woody Strode etc. Put those guys up against any rugby team and they'd KILL. Even though they're either in their 70s or dead.

Nice to see a pic from the Golden Age of STS, and one of the nearly forgotten Missions I had talked about in an earlier post. Just an excellent pic of John Blaha having a little soccer fun ! It cheered me up to see this one as it seems to be forever that I saw a nice pic from STS-33. |

Ed, I suspect that the soccer ball was provided by Blaha's crewmate on STS-33, Sonny Carter, who was a professional soccer player before becoming a Navy pilot and flight surgeon, and of course, astronaut.

He'll have to, considering the fact "rounders" has NOTHING to do with baseball. |

Steve, where did you hear about Deke and Wally playing cricket? I know Deke was on bombers during the last war and was stationed over in England so there is every chance he played or at least watched the game then. But I've never read or seen anything baout it. Ed, would you have any pictures of Deke or Wally or any astro's playing cricket. Its the type of thing I'ld like to get signed. A bit different!Si |

Si,The info came in an article in Spaceflight in the past year or two. The piece was actually about the Brits who went to work for NASA after moving down from Canada after the cancellation of the Avro Arrow project. (including John Hodge I believe.) There was mention of a cricket match between NASA and the ex-pats XI of which Deke and Wally were named in the NASA squad. There was also I seem to recall a small B&W photo of one of the matches. I can see the scene as Wally clean bowls the batsman - looks to the umpire and appeals... "GOTCHA!!!" Steve |

The game, that includes Schirra and Slayton as reserve players for the "Space Task Group Cricket Team," is chronicled on P.84-5 of Chris Gainor's excellent book "Arrows to the Moon." www.countdowncreations.com/bookarr.htm There are also photos, including notables such as John Hodge, playing, but I can't spot either of the astronauts in them.
