Astronauts Alan Shepard (left) and Frank Borman are training in the Gemini mission simulator at Cape Kennedy. In early 1964 Shepard was unofficially named prime crew command pilot and Borman backup crew pilot for the first manned Gemini mission. However, in March 1964 Shepard was removed from flight status due to his ear problem (Menieres Syndrome). Borman was subsequently reassigned to the Gemini-4 backup crew as command pilot.

Ed, where do you come up with these great photos? Please keep them coming.

It's so odd to see Shepard in a Gemini photo. Any more "unflowns," e.g. Cooper in Apollo, any of the Apollo guys in the shuttle?

Steven, I have some more "unflowns" up my sleeve!

Ditto... please keep them coming!

Looks odd seeing Borman in the right seat.

Can you imagine being launched out of those door openings by those ejection seats they're sitting in.

Man, that's pretty close tolerance.

Notice the simplicity of the pilots switch panel, and the lack of one by the command pilot. A very early version ! Probably before Gus Grissom had his say on the panel arrangements (Gemini Pre-Gusmobile).

The photo was taken in early 1964, so the spacecraft was still under development.

The apparent lack of panels is from the angle of the photo. Shepard's left hand panel is blocked by the splash curtain along the left side of the hatchway. The top of the center console can be seen just above Shepard's right hand.

I have always thought the electrical connector on the top of the ejection seat in the early sim photos was odd (visible below Borman's headrest).

All times are CT (US)
