View from the top: this unusual photo was made from the "beanie cap" on top of the external tank, just after rollout of space shuttle Atlantis for STS-38 on June 18, 1990. The crawler-transporter can be seen in the distance, making its way back to the Vehicle Assembly Building.

That's a unique shot, Ed. That was taken in the midst of all the hydrogen leaks that was causing havoc to NASA's shuttle schedule in the summer of 1990.
If I remember correctly, Atlantis was brought back to the VAB for further repairs before finally launching in November '90.

You are correct, Tom. It is no coincidence I selected this photo: I just completed an article for Spaceflight with a diary of these problems and the shuttle's grounding in the second half of 1990.
