On the day STS-114 is scheduled for launch, here is the crew portrait for the next flight, STS-121. From the left are astronaut Stephanie D. Wilson, Michael E. Fossum, both mission specialists; Steven W. Lindsey, commander; Piers J. Sellers, mission specialist; Mark E. Kelly, pilot; and Lisa M. Nowak, mission specialist. Interesting fact is that Thomas Reiter appears to be missing. His name is in the mission emblem that was released, but the emblems seen here don't have Reiter's name...

I've just downloaded this from the NASA website and noticed the picture is credited as having been taken on January 4th 2005. I believe this was long before Reiter was assigned to the crew hence the old patch and no sign of him in the picture.

I guess the question is why take a picture in January and wait until July to release it?I've certainly not seen this picture until Ed posted it here, and I check the NASA site fairly regularly, so I would be interested if anyone as seen it earlier.

There might be something poetic about not releasing it until the day of Discovery's launch, but it seems a long time to be sitting on a photo

My point was: why release it when there will be a new portrait WITH Reiter? Or has he been removed from the crew because plans have changed?

Perhaps, as with the original 114 litho, he's not part of the primary crew?
