Here is a shot I took myself for a change, not a NASA-photo.The date is April 8, 1981. STS-1 pilots John Young and Bob Crippen have just landed at Patrick AFB near KSC and are talking to the press, two days before Columbia's historic first launch attempt. At left George Abbey is climbing from Young's T-38 and at right, wearing quarantine mask, is KSC security chief Charles Buckley. Ed Hengeveld |

Ed, that was your first shuttle-pic in Space History Photo of the Week, and today the last shuttle launched. I am happy to live during the shuttle-time and now I am a little bit sad. What will follow? |

So George Abbey rode in T-38's? Didn't know that. When did they start landing at the Shuttle Landing Facility before missions? |

I believe that started with STS-6. |
