Danish astronaut Andreas Mogensen, who flew twice to the International Space Station, most recently on SpaceX's Crew 7, is now the head of the European Space Agency's (ESA) astronaut corps. He posted the following to social media this morning (June 10, 2025): I am proud to say that I have taken over the position of head of the European Astronaut Corps and ESA's Human Exploration Group at the Astronaut Center in Cologne. It is a challenging time with a lot of uncertainty but also an exciting time where we are trying to develop a commercial space station to replace the International Space Station when it is retired in about five years, while we are planning to return to the moon and hopefully one day in the future, journey on to Mars. We have only just begun our journey into space and there are for sure many exciting discoveries and surprises awaiting us. I do not recall seeing a list of past ESA head astronauts. I know that Michel Tognini, Frank De Winne and Gerhard Thiele previously held the role, but during what years and were there others? |
