I've come across this photo among those associated with the Mercury-Atlas 1 (MA-1) flight. I'm wondering who these folks are?

The USAF caption on the back reads, "CCMTA, NASA, PAD 14. Mercury, NASA & McDonnell VIP's in front of MA-1." It's dated July 28, 1960 and is photo number PL-60-56291.

Is that Dr. Gilruth third from right? McDonnell's John Yardley might be the second from the left. But I'm not sure. Does anyone have more definitive IDs for these two as well as the others? Thanks.

I'd say that the two guys on the right are Scott Simpkinson (glasses) and George Low (far right).

Are the badges legible at all in the original?

Sorry, no, the names on the badges aren't legible enough. The image is from an original print from 1960, so it's not high-res in today's sense.

Thanks! And I forgot to mention that I think you nailed Gilruth as third from right.

Chuck (Watts Way), we may have some common ground here. Please send me an email at micropooz@starpower.net.

Looks like Max Faget at far right.

I first thought it was Faget on the right too. But after looking at pics of both Faget and Low and given the fact that Gilruth and Low were frequently together on the job, I concluded him to be Low.

When I blow up the photo in PhotoShop, the fellow third from the left has something like "Ed Pete..." written on his hardhat. Does anyone know of a MAC or NASA VIP with a name like that? Seems to ring a feint bell.

The fellow at center remains unidentified.

Definitely Max Faget at far right. George Low is not in the picture.

Edward F. Peters was a McDonnell engineer who is in the U.S. Space Workers Hall of Fame in Titusville, FL, so that's probably who that fellow is.

All times are CT (US)
