From the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, where McBride led the astronaut educational programs for 15 years: To honor Jon’s extraordinary life and legacy, we will hold a remembrance ceremony on Tuesday, August 13, at 10 a.m. on the bottom floor of Space Shuttle Atlantis. We invite the public to join us in celebrating the life of this remarkable individual. |

Very sad to hear of McBride's passing. Why didn't he reconsidered to command a space shuttle mission? |

Met him at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex about 2008. A true gentleman. |

McBride was offered the command of STS-35 (ASTRO-1) but ultimately turned it down. From his NASA oral history: It was tough making that call. I might be the only person in history, I don’t know, who was assigned to a mission that pulled out of it. I think the next week or two they named Vance Brand to replace me.Looking back on it, I still don’t know that I would have changed anything, because I got back to West Virginia, and a lot of my friends back there helped me establish a venture capital company, which we could focus on bringing industry and jobs to West Virginia, which I did for 10 years, and really feel like I made an impact there. We created a lot of business opportunities for people. As it turns out, if I’d have gone to Houston, ASTRO flew, Vance Brand flew. I don't know. It's second-guessing. I'm sure sorry I didn't get to fly as a commander once or twice aboard the Space Shuttle, but the things I got to do were just as remarkable in many ways. |

Very sad and unexpected news. Met him a couple of times at the Astronaut Encounter events at KSC. Really great guy with a great sense of humor. He will be very much missed. Thank you "Big John". My condolences to his family. |

McBride was proud of his family’s Donegal roots and was a frequent visitor to Ireland. I also think he applied for Irish citizenship? RIP |
