Takes a special kind of man to be told you're not going to walk on the moon after all and live with it. |

I attended an outstanding lecture by Gen. Engle at the National Air and Space Museum some years back. One of the memorable parts was him talking about the expansion and contraction of metals on the X-15. After the lecture, I was able to see first-hand what Gen. Engle was talking about on the museum's X-15. |

I was so fortunate to be from General Engle's home county here in Kansas. I was able to meet him twice, once in his hometown of Chapman after his STS-2 flight and again at the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson. To hear him talk on the X-15 flights and his manual reentry on STS-2 was something I won't forget. Rest in peace, Joe. You will be missed. |

RIPWas number one on my list of astronauts who I'd like to meet but unfortunately it was not meant to be. A true professional who got on with the job after being disappointed, and did it so well. An example to us all. |

Very saddened to hear about Joe Engle passing away. I always considered him one of my favorite astronauts. I had the great opportunity to meet him and his wife twice.I attended two of his lectures at EAA Oshkosh and his lecture about the X-15 rocket plane was amazing. I could listen to his lectures all day long. It was interesting to listen to him compare the X-15 to the Space Shuttle. He is a true research pilot. Thoughts and prayers for his family. General Engle thank you for paving the way for our pilots and astronauts of today. Godspeed on your final flight!! |

From the family's obituary: A funeral service is to be conducted at one o'clock in the afternoon on Thursday, the 18th of July, at House of Prayer Lutheran Church, 14045 Space Center Boulevard in Houston, where Eric Youngdahl, Senior Pastor, will officiate. For those unable to attend the service in-person, virtual attendance may be accessed by visiting Joe Henry's online memorial tribute and selecting the "Join Livestream" icon on the service section. While there, you may also share fond memories and words of comfort and condolences with his family by selecting the "Add a Memory" icon.At a later date, Maj. Gen. Engle will be interred with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery, under the direction of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons. In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions may be directed to the EAA Aviation Foundation, P. O. Box 3086, Oshkosh, WI 54903 or the National Aviation Hall of Fame, P. O. Box 31096, Dayton, OH 45437. |
