This could mean that Reid Wiseman's assignment to an Artemis mission is forthcoming. |

There's a tweet from Scott Kelly about NASA actively seeking a Chief of the Astronaut Office along with the government link with the job description and how to apply. Is this something new, or is it standard government practice when filling a job? I've never heard of or seen this before, and the assumption is that you don't have to be an astronaut in order to be Chief Astronaut. It has always seemed that the job was filled by current astronauts who were asked and agreed to taking the job for a few years, then often return to flight status. Maybe no existing astronaut wants the job, which would require being unavailable for crew assignment while they held it. And the fact that Feustel was appointed interim or acting chief implies that Wiseman's stepping down from the job was on short notice. That could mean he's about to be named to the Artemis II crew. Or something else... |

Some clarification from NASA: - Reid Wiseman stepped down on Nov. 14 to return to the pool of astronauts eligible for flight assignments.
- Drew Feustel was his deputy and has been the acting Chief of the Astronaut Office since Nov. 15.
- As noted above, the new permanent role of chief is going through a competitive process right now and is technically open to all federal employees.
The Chief of the Astronaut Office position has always been filled by an astronaut, but so was the Director of Flight [Crew] Operations until it wasn't, so there is some precedence. |
