Graeme Ferguson, the Canadian director, producer, writer and cinematographer who partnered with three high school friends and another filmmaker to launch the giant-screen movie company IMAX, died on May 8, 2021. He was 91. Ferguson was instrumental in getting IMAX cameras into space. Astronaut Susan Helms credits the documentary short "The Dream Is Alive" (1985) for inspiring her to become an astronaut, and she appears in the 2002 IMAX documentary "Space Station 3D," which Ferguson produced. From IMAX cinematographer James Neihouse (via Facebook): This past Saturday, May 8th, the IMAX world lost its creator and guiding light. Graeme Ferguson the last surviving founder of IMAX Corporation passed away, peacefully, at his beloved Norway Point home on the Lake of Bays in Ontario, Canada. He was a true visionary, an amazing filmmaker, a "foodie" before there was such a thing, and an amazing human being. He loved cursing the lake in his classic antique wooden boats. He was always available when you needed advice, and very supportive of the giant screen cinema world. I first met and worked with Graeme in 1976 on the first IMAX underwater film - OCEAN, and have had the privilege, no, honor of working on most of his IMAX films since then. He believed in me, and helped me grow as a filmmaker. He was always ready with praise when deserved, but more importantly with constructive critique when needed. He was a wonderful mentor and a great friend. I shall miss him immensely. Graeme shooting the launch of the Space Shuttle Columbia in 1981 for the IMAX film "Hail Columbia!" |

Sad news. Historians, documentarians and people in the arts are as vital to keeping exploration going as people on the ground in the program. I interviewed Graeme when Toni Myers died a few years ago. His pride in IMAX, getting IMAX in space, Toni and James was very apparent. |

His IMAX work was tremendous. In years past, the first thing I would do on a trip to the National Air and Space Museum would be to book a ticket to see an IMAX movie. I have a VHS of "The Dream is Alive" but it pales in viewing to seeing it at NASM. |
