Annie Glenn, the widow of Mercury astronaut and Senator John Glenn, died early Tuesday morning (May 19, 2020). She was 100. Glenn died of COVID-19 complications at a nursing home near St. Paul, Minnesota, said Hank Wilson, a spokesman for the Glenn College of Public Affairs at The Ohio State University. At the time of John Glenn’s death in 2016, the two had been married 73 years. She had moved out of the apartment they shared in Columbus in recent years and gone to live with her daughter, Lyn, according to Wilson. A virtual memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2020, at 11 a.m EDT. The service will be officiated by the Rev. Amy Miracle, pastor for the Broad Street Presbyterian Church in Columbus. The memorial will be virtual with no parishioners or guests in attendance due to the COVID-19 restrictions. I met Annie on several occasions and she was always very friendly, but my favorite memory of her comes from the NASA press conference where it was announced that John would be returning to orbit on the space shuttle.I was seated a couple of rows back from Annie and noticed her watching her husband while he was on stage. I went to capture the moment with a photo, but as soon as I put the camera to my eye, I was surprised to find she was now not only looking back at me, but she had her camera pointed back in my direction. We quickly exchanged smiles as we both put down our cameras. This photo was taken a few years later in 2002 at the 40th anniversary celebration of John's Mercury flight at the National Air and Space Museum. |

NASA release NASA Remembers Annie GlennAbove: Sen. John Glenn and his wife Annie listen to speakers during a reception at Ohio State University honoring the 50th anniversary of John Glenn's historic flight aboard Friendship 7 Monday, Feb. 20, 2012, in Columbus, Ohio. Glenn was the first American to orbit Earth. (NASA/Bill Ingalls) The following is a statement on the passing of Annie Glenn, wife of former NASA astronaut Sen. John Glenn: "We are deeply saddened by the passing of Annie Glenn. A stalwart member of the space and military communities, her courageous support of her legendary husband John was unmatched. "She provided an example for other women who followed to face the challenges of being part of our nation's space program, and the stress of having spouses in combat. She stood steadfastly by her husband as he took to space once again as the oldest person to orbit Earth, even as she continued her own lifelong public service on behalf of children, the elderly, and the disabled. "The Glenns dedication to each other is well known, and we looked to them as an unmatched example of the strength and compassion that a lifetime of devotion creates. She will be missed." |

VERY sad of Annie's passing from this virus; may God rest her soul and that she'll be reunited with her husband when Jesus returns. |

Sad news. One very special lady. As it happens I am just reading her husband’s memoir and the first word on today’s first page is: Annie. |
