Who was the first American astronaut to visit the Soviet Union? Was it Frank Borman in 1969? I believe Tom Stafford was the next. Yuri Gagarin, Gherman Titov and Valentina Tereshkova all did world tours after their spaceflights. Titov visited the U.S. in 1962 but I don't believe Gagarin or Tereshkova ever visited the U.S. Does anyone know why? |

Frank Borman, along with his wife Susan, was the first astronaut to visit Russia in July 1969. Neil Armstrong also visited Russia twice in May and June of 1970.The first astronaut and cosmonaut to meet together were John Glenn and Gherman Titov in May 1962, Washington, D.C. In June 1965, Jim McDivitt and Ed White met up with Yuri Gagarin at the Paris Air Show and during that same year in September, Gordon Cooper and Pete Conrad met Alexei Leonov and Pavel Belyayev in Athens. There are other encounters if you want to have them posted... |

It's also interesting to check the visits of Russian cosmonauts to Switzerland as this triggered the use of Omega watches aboard Russian spaceflight missions (e.g Soyuz 15). Some early visits included: - 1971: Vitali Sevastiynov
- 1973: Alexei Yeliseyev

Looks like Valentina Tereshkova was in Houston in May 1977. |

Any idea about the nature of this visit by Soviet cosmonauts to Houston in 1970 was? I forgot who the cosmonauts in the image are, but I was always impressed how warmly it seemed the reception was for the cosmonauts that they got invited to a backyard barbecue by their American counterparts. |

Yuri Gagarin did not visit the United States. There are citations (including on Wikipedia) that state that due to Gagarin's popularity at the time of his flight, that President Kennedy blocked any visit to the United States, but the sourcing for that is not clear. |

I wonder how these diplomatic visits by Soviet cosmonauts were arranged. Was it the Soviet Union reaching out to various countries to offer a visit or was it these countries asking for cosmonauts to visit? For example, why did England host Gagarin if England was a U.S. ally? Also, if Kennedy didn't want Gagarin to visit the U.S., then why was Titov's visit permissible? Is there a link to the citation that says the Kennedy didn't want Gagarin to visit? |

Wikipedia sources it to an April 2011 column in The Telegraph, but the source for that citation is not known. It is difficult, today, for us to understand the level of Gagarin's instant celebrity. When he visited Britain, he was driven through cheering crowds in an open-topped Rolls Royce, with the numberplate YG-1, to take tea with the Queen at Buckingham Palace (Elena recalls that she "gave him some rather beautiful dolls to bring back for me and Galina"). The Russophobe Daily Mail even ran the headline: "Make him Sir Yuri!", while John F Kennedy was so alarmed by his popularity that he banned him from entering the United States. |

The cosmonauts in the 1970 photo are the Soyuz 9 crew of Andriyan Nikolayev and Vitali Sevastiyanov. |

I googled "Scott Carpenter" + "trampoline" + "USSR" to confirm my memory that Carpenter visited the Soviet Union in 1972. It was a goodwill tour with US gymnasts and maybe even George Nissen, or Nissen Trampolines. Carpenter and Nissen first met at NAS Ottumwa (Iowa), while Carpenter and his fellow cadets were attending WWII Primary Flight training in the latter half of 1945. Nissen, and Iowa native, was teaching pilots how to orient themselves in the air, using one of his inventions: the trampoline. |

This is a photo of a gathering of astronauts and cosmonauts at Star City in 1987, as part of the celebration of the 30th anniversary of Sputnik. Can anyone help identifying all who were there? |

Easily done, InterCosmos crews from many countries...Front row between Valentina Tereshkova and Alexei Leonov are Kathryn Sullivan (? Shannon Lucid), John Fabian. Other Americans include Owen Garriott, James Van Hoften, Ron Grabe (second left top row could be Marc Garneau?), Richard Gordon, Stu Roosa and Charlie Walker. |

I beg to differ on this. Shannon Lucid is much taller. Thought for a moment Sullivan. But sandwiched between Tereshkova and STS-7 crew mate John Fabian. |

Not Sally Ride, can we find out using the signatures? |

I looked at the autographs on the photo. Neither signed it. I even looked at the ASE poster they produced at the time. Neither signed it. Sullivan too is pretty tall. Taller than Tereshkova or Leonov. I am convinced it is Ride. |

Sally Ride left NASA in May 1987. This was taken in October. The astronaut in question between Valentina Tereshkova and John Fabian is Kathryn Sullivan. |

I was mistaken. This citation shows that Gagarin was in New York City in 1963. In this photograph from 1963, Secretary-General U Thant (2nd right) and the President of the General Assembly, Carlos Sosa-Rodriguez (left) receive cosmonauts Valentina Tereshkova (2nd left) – the first woman in space – and Gagarin (right) at the UN Headquarters, in New York. |

Here is a different backyard image[/URL] of those astronauts and cosmonauts. At Jim McDivitt's house, I think. |

It looks like that same man can be seen in this photo standing between the cosmonauts. Perhaps he is an interpreter.I don't see a name tag on the suit seen on the table, but I think I see a "Schmitt" name tag at bottom center on what might be some lunar boots. |
