With great sadness, I have learned, through the British Interplanetary Society, that UK spaceflight journalist (Flight International) and author Tim Furniss passed away earlier this week. He was 71 and had been ill for some time.I first worked with Tim back in the early 1980s, helping to provide information and photos for his Logbooks published by Janes. When, after 15 years, he was unable to get the update to his Manned Spaceflight Log published he approached me. Together with my brother Mike we then cooperated to produce the first Praxis Manned Spaceflight Log. Tim had penned the original entries from 1961 to 1990 and so we amended them to fit the Praxis style and updated the content to 2006. We had planned a subsequent update, but Tim was too ill to participate. But with Tim blessing, my brother and I worked on the Springer Manned Spaceflight Log II edition covering the missions between 2006 and 2012. Tim was always enthusiastic about his work and had accumulated a great photo library over the years. For almost three decades we often spoke about my research, his articles in the Flight magazine, space-related trips and interviews and our books. He was a good friend and often commented on how he enjoyed reading the latest edition of my Orbiter and Zenit magazines. He will be sadly missed, but I am pleased to have had a small part in helping to get his beloved and much delayed Spaceflight Log published. The third edition of the Springer Spaceflight Log will be dedicated to the memory and achievements of Tim. RIP my friend. |

That is very sad news. His original Manned Spaceflight Log was one of the first books I ever bought. Loved the photos and mission descriptions. It inspired my interest in the subject. Also enjoyed his articles in Flight International and appearances on TV. Glad you were able to continue much of his work Dave! |

Sad news indeed. The first book about human spaceflight I ever bought was Mr. Furniss's "Space Shuttle Log". It only covered the first 22 missions, upto STS-61A, but was very informative. I always hoped there might have been an updated edition after STS-135. |

Tim and I developed a long distance friendship when I worked in NORAD's Cheyenne Mountain's Space Surveillance Center in the early to mid 1980s. He was one of a number of Brits who helped me gain knowledge about the Soviet Manned Spaceflight Program. I'm forever indebted to him. RIP, my friend! |

Sad news indeed. Tim took over from me as supplier of information to the Guinness Book of Records. He was appreciative of my 'Manned Spaceflight' booklets and I was pleased to be able to be just a small part in encouraging him in his keen interest in the exploration of space. RIP. |

Very sorry to hear this. Tim's 1986 edition of his "Manned Spaceflight Log" is one of the most regularly accessed books in my space-library. It is still a mine of background information. Ad astra... |
