Shocking report from the New York Times about Neil Armstrong's death: When Neil Armstrong died in a Cincinnati hospital two weeks after undergoing heart surgery in 2012, his family released a touching tribute addressing the astronaut's millions of admirers around the globe."Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty," they wrote, telling fans of the first man to walk on the moon that "the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink." But in private, the family's reaction to his death at 82 was far stormier. His two sons contended that incompetent post-surgical care at Mercy Health — Fairfield Hospital had cost Mr. Armstrong his life, and even one expert retained by the hospital would find serious problems with his treatment. The hospital defended the care, but paid the family $6 million to settle the matter privately and avoid devastating publicity, documents show. The hospital insisted on keeping the complaints and the settlement secret. |

If the story pans out to be true, this is a very disturbing story that attaches controversy to a man who made an effort to avoid being the subject of media attention and valued privacy. |

Any controversy was not of Neil's doing. Discussing this further will change nothing and may cause upset or distress to friends and family. Best left alone. |

Absolutely unbelievable — to think he could have been celebrating the 50th anniversary with his crewmates. |

It is particularly sad that the first two men to land spacecraft on the Moon appear to have died unnecessarily following inadequate medical care. |

Don't understand that post. Buzz Aldrin is still alive.

He means land the craft, not ride the craft to a landing... |

The first two men to land (pilot) the LM to a landing on the Moon were Neil Armstrong and Charles 'Pete' Conrad. The Lunar Module Pilots for Apollos 11 and 12 did not manually land the LMs. |

I wasn't aware that medical incompetence was a contributing factor in Pete Conrad's motorcycle accident death. Wikipedia does, however, state that after the accident he died "later." Details? |

It is my understanding that Pete died from internal bleeding. It has generally been accepted that had he been treated at a major city hospital the chances are there would have been an earlier diagnosis and affective treatment likely to have led to a recovery. |
