Grace Corrigan, the mother of STS-51L Teacher in Space Christa McAuliffe, died on Thursday (November 8, 2018) in Framingham, Massachusetts. She was 94. Following the Challenger tragedy, for many years Grace carried on Christa's message of the importance of education, traveling throughout the country as the keynote speaker at Challenger Centers, Space Camps, and elementary and high schools – many bearing Christa's name. Christa's message was also shared through the book, "A Journal for Christa," authored by Grace. |

This is particularly sad news. Back when I was putting together my "Teacher in Space" book my wife and I visited Framingham in Massachusetts, where Grace had very kindly offered to put us up for a couple of nights while she was helping me with information on the book before we continued our vacation. I got to meet all of Christa's brothers and sisters, and we thoroughly enjoyed our time together with Grace. She was a remarkable woman, and toured the country talking to school children everywhere and at every opportunity about Christa's mission, and what she had hoped to accomplish. Grace helped a lot in putting the book together, and in recognition of her invaluable assistance and friendship I dedicated all proceeds from the book to the Challenger Education Fund. God Bless, Grace Corrigan. |

I worked for the MetroWest Daily News in Framingham for many years, and she was always very gracious with the media. I never had a chance to interview her, but I know she was a regular voice in our paper after Christa died. RIP. |

I was always amazed at her ability to talk about such a painful family tragedy. The Challenger crew (and her daughter in particular) were lucky to have had her as a spokeswoman keeping their memory alive. RIP |

Let me add to my words above about this remarkable, dedicated lady, and relate how she proved such a massive influence in my own life. It began when I wrote to Grace complimenting her on her wonderful book, "A Journal for Christa," which subsequently led to a treasured correspondence, and a story that most of the Outward Odyssey authors do not even know, and will undoubtedly surprise them. When Grace and I began discussing my own tribute book about her daughter, I suggested that if she could find a suitable publisher for my book in the U.S., I would donate all the proceeds to a Challenger charity of her choosing. Grace straightaway contacted the editor in chief at the University of Nebraska Press (which had published her book), and he asked for first look at the manuscript. It was accepted, and published, and the editor, Gary Dunham, then took on my next project, "Fallen Astronauts." Gary happened to be a space fan, and asked if I would consider becoming series editor for a projected set of around eight books detailing the social history of space exploration. That was in 2003. Fifteen years later, the series now stands at 22 books either published or in the works. If Grace Corrigan had not approached UNP with my Teacher in Space book concept, the Outward Odyssey series would never have happened, and I have no idea what direction my life would have taken. I therefore owe her an incalculable debt, and I will always continue to salute and admire this gracious, caring, dedicated and truly amazing woman. |

It really is a small world Colin — I didn't know that story. So, I actually owe Grace Corrigan a personal thank you — without her I wouldn't have contributed to your UNP book "Footprints in the Dust."My thirteen year old self, so shocked by Challenger that it kick-started a lifelong interest in space exploration, wouldn't have believed it but Grace Corrigan had an unexpected influence on my life! |
