It's a little over two years since the passing of Joe Garino.
Joseph David Garino Jr. was born on January 28, 1928 into a Navy family in Honolulu, Hawaii. Garino was headed to high school basketball practice on the morning of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor - he hid in a ditch to escape the bombs. Garino went on to serve in the U.S. Coast Guard and later won the badge of a U.S. Army Paratrooper.

In 1951 he switched to the U.S. Air Force and physical training assignments. Garino was conditioning jet pilots at Langley Air Force Base, Va., when the Mercury astronauts were named. He was then placed on loan from the Air Force to NASA with the job of running the astronaut physical training facility at Houston, and he became the Director of Astronaut Physical Conditioning. In the role of physical training instructor, M/Sgt. Garino devised isometric exercises and strength and conditioning training regimes to keep the Apollo astronauts cardiovascular fit and mission-ready. He ran 2 miles per day and was a particular advocate for running activities such as handball, squash, and tennis that built stamina and hand-to-eye co-ordination. Garino promoted the use of weights and archery to strengthen fingers, hands, and wrists. He also recommended the use of energy foods, fruit juices, and the Exer-Genie exerciser. Joe Garino served his country in the military for 22 years.

Married to Dorothy "Snooky" Garino who pre-deceased him in 2006, they had a son Joe D. Garino III and twin daughters, Theresa and Sharon. Joe D. Garino Jr. passed away on Friday, January 8, 2016 at the age of 87 in Hilltop Lakes, Texas.
