I was saddened to learn of the passing of Georgy Mikhailovich. I always thought he was one of the characters of the Soviet space programme. When Rex Hall and I met with Yuri Romanenko he explained that Grechko always "like to tell a good story," such as exaggerating the events of the Soyuz 26/Salyut 6 EVA regarding the erroneous reports of Romanenko being untethered and almost floating out of the hatch. In April 1994 Neville Kidger and I met with Grechko during a trip to Jodrell Bank Observatory. Apart from informal discussions, I had the opportunity to talk with him about his career and experiences and go through his biography I had compiled. He kindly updated details and personally filled in some missing facts, making that copy extra special and which still resides in my archive. He was clearly very proud of the fact that he had flown to Salyut 4, 6 and 7 and, with his familiar big smile, said he was still hoping one day to be allowed to fly to Mir. It is a shame he never did. RIP Georgy Mikhailovich, it was a pleasure to have followed your stellar career and to have met you.
