About 30 collectSPACE members gathered at the Moon Hut in November 2001. Someone had invited "Doc" Graveline to attend also. Doc was very gracious to sign autographs and pose for pictures. Just a wonderful gathering.Several years later I corresponded with Doc about his research and effects of Statins. |

On statins, he was spot on in my opinion. |

Living 31 years after quickly deciding not to be an astronaut for personal reasons, you know it wasn't health related... RIP.

Just received word from Doc's family. The other day NASA called his widow as they had organized a fly over past the Cape in Doc's honor with a U.S. flag on board that they will present to her in gratitude for all that he did for NASA. He will be buried in Arlington with full military honors. |

I was saddened to hear of the passing of 'Doc' Graveline. During the research for the 2007 book 'NASA's Scientist Astronaut' I co-authored with Colin Burgess and published by Springer-Praxis, 'Doc' gave considerable support and material which greatly enhanced the finished product. It was a pleasure to add his story to the book. |

To say I was overwhelmed with sadness to hear of Doc's passing while I was on a tour of Tokyo would be an understatement. Over the past decade or so he and I shared three notable things - the same birthday, a long-standing correspondence, and an enduring friendship. My wife and I stayed with Doc and Suzanne twice on trips over to the States, and I have fond memories of fishing from the beach with Doc, exploring the Canaveral launch facilities with him showing me around, and just simply sitting comfortably in the sun room of their home in Merritt Island while we discussed our mutual passion for spaceflight history and writing. He was a truly unforgettable character, and it was always a great sadness for him the way that NASA forced him out of the astronaut corps after the media of the day published horribly one-sided details of his pending divorce. Those, like me, who knew Doc well, saw him as a gentle, intelligent, talented and compassionate man, whose ongoing preventative research for NASA into the lethal dangers of cosmic radiation associated with long-duration flights away from our planet, and his strong views on the effects higher doses of statin drugs can have on the human body and memory, were a credit to this wonderful and resourceful man. Just the day before he died, Doc sent me a message in which he attached a short back-cover review intended for Jay Chladek's Outward Odyssey book on the history of space stations, so it was a complete shock to learn of his passing just hours later. I will miss you, my friend. Vale, Duane ("Doc") Graveline, 1931-2016. |

This is an article from Doc's website of his hero's send off at Arlington National Cemetery on May 3, 2017. Very impressive with full military honors. RIP Doc. |
