Henry S. F. Cooper Jr., who as a writer reached beyond the planet to pioneer reporting on space travel, died on Jan. 31, 2016 at his home in Cooperstown, New York. He was 82. The New York Times reports:
Mr. Cooper celebrated scientific achievement, addressed scientific failure and demystified what was behind both.

Reviewing his book "Apollo on the Moon" in 1969 in The New York Times, Franklin A. Long, who was the vice president for research at Cornell University, said that Mr. Cooper's description of an imminent mission to the moon was "remarkably evocative" and that a reader "gets the feel of what it is like to be a crew member in the lunar module."

Mr. Cooper began his book "Thirteen: The Apollo Flight That Failed" this way: "At a little after 9 Central Standard Time on the night of Monday, April 13, 1970, there was, high in the western sky, a tiny flare of light that in some respects resembled a star exploding far away in our galaxy."

In addition to those two books, Cooper wrote: "A House in Space" about Skylab, "Moon Rocks," and "Before Lift-off: The Making of a Space Shuttle Crew," among other space exploration-related titles.

Godspeed to one of those lucky enough to have reported on the Space Age right from the beginning.

I always thought that Mr. Cooper's 1972 book about Apollo 13 was both very well written and very underrated at the time it was written, and then greatly overshadowed by Jim Lovell's book nearly 35 years later.

My 1995 edition copy:

RIP Mr. Cooper.

I agree wholeheartedly about "Apollo 13: The Flight that Failed". Seriously under-appreciated.

I still remember reading "Thirteen: The Flight that Failed" shortly after it was published. A great book. Thank you Mr. Cooper.

I recall the excitement of buying a copy of 'A House In Space,' thinking "at last a book on Skylab." Henry's other two books on Apollo 13 and STS-41-G were also early prized addition to my library and often thumbed through over the years.

One of the few people who inspired my interest in the written history of space flight... and on their latest journey together he is probably interviewing Ed Michell as we remember them both. RIP Mr. Cooper.

Thirteen: the Flight that Failed and A House in Space are treasured books in my space library. Mr. Cooper was a gifted writer.
