James W.H. Justice, an electronics research engineer responsible for the systems design of the first color camera used on the moon while working for Westinghouse, has died at the age of 89, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Mr. Justice counted his work on the space camera as among his top achievements. In a video posted on the website Collective Legacy Project, Mr. Justice described how at a time when video from space was being transmitted in black and white, he was asked not only to make it in color but on limited bandwidth and accessible in people’s homes on ordinary televisions. He likened the task to fitting a quart into a pint. He said he outlined some ideas in a few days. He missed the first transmission but said he heard it was a success.
The Westinghouse annual report for 1969 states that he was responsible for the systems design of the Westinghouse color TV system used on the moon and at the time was designing the circuitry and electronics for the screw-in fluorescent lamp.
