The Group 3 astronauts were selected in October 1963. President Kennedy was assassinated in November. Has anyone ever heard of any Group 3 astronauts who met JFK during that month? He did visit Cape Canaveral during that time.

The third group of astronauts reported to NASA in January 1964 to begin training as astronauts.

I asked a similar question awhile back. Neil Armstrong said he never met John Kennedy.

So, that makes Al Shepard the only moonwalker (and crew member of a lunar mission) to ever meet President Kennedy.

About six years ago, we attended the dedication of the Apollo memorial at the Space Walk of Fame in Titusville, FL. Skylab astronaut Jerry Carr and Apollo astronaut Al Worden were present for the event.

After the dedication, a group of us attendees were standing next to a bust of JFK, having an informal conversation with Al Worden. Someone in our group asked Worden if he had ever met JFK, to which he replied that he had not, since he was still in Test Pilot School at the time JFK was in office.

Another person asked Worden if he had ever met any succeeding presidents after JFK and he replied that, yes, he had met a majority of them. A third person in the group asked Worden "What were they like?" to which Worden simply shrugged his shoulders and, very nonchalantly, replied "They were just people!"

Yes Tom. As near as I can figure out, Alan Shepard was the only moonwalker to meet JFK.

All times are CT (US)
