collectSPACE Soviet-era cosmonaut Anatoly Berezovoy, commanded Salyut space station, diesSoviet-era cosmonaut Anatoly Berezovoy, who led the first expedition on board Russia's final Salyut space station, died Saturday (Sept. 20). He was 72. "[Berezovoy] was a member of a legendary generation of cosmonauts, a man of great will and courage, [and] a top-class professional who did so much for the development of cosmonautics and major research projects," said Oleg Ostapenko, the chief of the Russian federal space agency Roscosmos. "His memory will live on forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved [him]." Chosen to be a cosmonaut in April 1970, Berezovoy made his first and only spaceflight 12 years later as commander of the Soyuz T-5 mission to the Salyut 7 space station. Launched on May 13, 1982, Berezovoy and flight engineer Valentin Lebedev spent a then-record 211 days aboard the orbiting outpost, which was the last of its type before the launch of the Mir space station in 1986. |

Another big loss in the spaceflight world.I met Anatoli Berezovoy once at the ASE Planetary Congress in Cologne in 2013 and asked him to sign a photo in the book "The Story of Space Station Mir". He signed without any hesitation and then he saw another image on the other page and said to me that this is also him in the Orlan suit. You can easily recognize him because of the moustache. Before I could grab the pen, he signed the photo too. Another gentleman in the Russian cosmonaut corps. Rest in Peace Anatoli Nikolayevich |

Indeed another sad loss. Anatoly was pint sized, always affable, good natured and liked to party. A great cosmonaut who held the space endurance record at 211 days for a while. I ask the modern ISS astronauts to spare a thought for those who flew longer missions then themselves in the equivalent of the Mir base block only! Described as a "recipe for murder". Would have loved to have read his equivalent version of Lebedev's "Diary of a Cosmonaut". Having met both, he was probably the less complicated and easier to work with of the two, dare I say.A regular at the ASE Congress's and on Cosmonautics Day in Star City where he celebrated his birthday the day before. It won't be the same without him. |

RIP Mr. Berezovoi!I still remember his flight clearly. I had just talked my father into buying a video recorder; just in time to tape the landing report on the news. |

I met Anatoly Berezovoy at Sotheby's in 1996. I will never forget the kindness he showed me and my children as he was taking items from his briefcase to sign for us. A complete gentleman. RIP |
