Fatima Dyczynski, a 24-year-old aerospace engineer and space enthusiast, was among the 298 victims of Malaysian Air flight MH17 shot down over the Ukraine on July 17, reports the company's website.

A German national, she attended the Technical University of Delft in the Netherlands, graduating with a degree in astronautical and aerospace engineering. She was part of the team preparing the launch in November 2013 of a series of nanosatellites or 'cubesats' called Delfi-n3Xt aboard a Russian Dnepr-1 rocket from Dombarovsky, a former Russian AF ICBM base now used for launching commercial rockets.

She founded a start-up company, Xoterra Space, dedicated to system analytics. According to Dutch and Australian news reports, she was a dedicated enthusiast of space technology, making it more accessible, and hoped to make a trip to Mars as an astronaut one day. She was en route to Perth, Western Australia, to take up a new job as a consultant to IBM.

Very sad news - news channels carrying so much bad news at the moment difficult to watch.

God bless all those affected by the loss of MH17...

Tragic that a young woman who saw the best for humanity should be killed by those who only know the evil side of rocketry. RIP.

There was an item on the Dutch news that her parents have visited the crash site, making them the first relatives to manage to do so.

It was a sad sight to see these loving and mourning parents walk past the wreckage. It is very sad that such a promising life was cut so short.

All times are CT (US)
