I was reading that back in the Apollo days, you could write to the crew and your message had a chance of being read to the crew during their mission. Do they do anything like that today?

I'm unaware of any recent examples of mission control reading fan messages to shuttle or station crews, but a number of the recent expedition crew members (in particular) have not only read but responded to fans writing to them through Twitter.
TJ Creamer was particularly good about replying via Twitter, sometimes having conversations in real time through tweets. Paolo Nespoli, who is up there now, is also quite conversational on Twitter.
