Do astronauts get paid the entire time they are on orbit or is it a set wage like the military? |

As far as the military astronauts go, they get paid the same way they would in the service, no difference. |

Do military astronauts receive flight pay while on orbit? I thought the Mercury Astronauts did, but when you get to longer flights (not to mention ISS stays) that gets a little steep I'm sure. Normally nobody's airborne THAT long. |

Flight pay is a set amount per month which is dependant upon rank and maintaining flight status. Military pilots are not paid a per-hour stipend for flying, although they receive a per-hour per diem while away from home station. Since during a spaceflight, government lodging and meals are available, per diem is quite low while in orbit. |

Wouldn't space flight fall under "Hazard Pay"? |

Pretty sure it would not fall under the umbrella of hazardous duty pay. Normally, that is based upon service in a region declared as a war zone or otherwise hazardous zone, as determined by DoD. Now, if the space shuttle had to land at Balad Air Base in Iraq... |

So being in outer space is no longer a hazardous zone? Interesting. |

Don't know if it was ever classified as a "hazardous zone" for military purposes.Just because something is dangerous does not, by default, make it a place where the military pays hazardous duty pay. I used to fly receiver air refueling for training and actual missions -- we flew in formation 12 feet behind and directly under a B-707 or MD KC-10. That was potentially hazardous, but we did not receive hazardous duty pay for it. Just as an example ... |

Okay, let me rephrase. Do hours logged in space flight count towards logged flight time for military pilot astronauts? Or as a form of deployment away from home station? |
