For my website, I've tried to include a memorable quote from each of the 12 moonwalkers - either their first words upon landing or walking on the moon, or noteworthy comments they made later on the moon.

Many are historic and famous, such as Neil Armstrong's, but others are less-known, but most of the 12 moonwalkers uttered words that are familiar and inspiring, such as:

  • Aldrin's "Magnificent Desolation"

  • Conrad's humorous "That may have been a small step for Neil..."

  • Shepard's "It's been a long way, but we're here"

  • Mitchell's "To the top of Cone Crater!"

  • Scott's "The Falcon is on the Plain of Hadley"

  • Schmitt's "A geologist's paradise, if I ever saw one!"
But I have not been able to find Alan Bean's first words on the moon, nor anything, frankly, of special note he said on the moon - except about the ruined TV camera.

I would like to find an interesting quote on the moon by Bean to add to my website.

If it helps with your website, it's officially recorded as an 'at', not an 'of':

104:42:36 Scott: Okay, Houston. The Falcon is on the Plain at Hadley.

And the Conrad quote would in fact be:

That may have been a small one for Neil...

not 'step.'

For Bean, there is always, shortly after landing:

110:34:11 Bean: I know it. Holy cran (sic), it's beautiful out here!

and:

110:38:19 Bean: It's beautiful out there. I even took a peek. It's a nice place to land. Boy, it sure was dusty, though.

Didn't Young comment on how America needed the shuttle while he was on the surface?

(I'm sure it will be in the ALSJ, but it's bedtime for me!)

This is what you're looking for:

120:26:21 England: ...The House passed the space budget yesterday, 277 to 60, which includes the vote for the Shuttle.

120:26:44 Young: The country needs that Shuttle mighty bad. You'll see.

Does Young's more famous, "Damn, Charlie, I got the farts again" make the list?

I especially like Young's comment from right after he stepped onto the Descartes highlands for the first time. "I'm glad they got ol' Brer Rabbit here, back in the briar patch where he belongs."

And don't forget Conrad actually started with "Whooppee!"

Thanks, guys, for all the help and corrections.

And Bean's "It's beautiful out there. I even took a peek. It's a nice place to land..." sure beats my "Let's get that TV camera out and show everyone..."

But I think I'll stick with Young's "We don't have to look far to pick up rocks..." instead of Young's "...I got the f----" again" comment above.

But it'd be hard to beat Cernan's parting comments on Apollo 17: "As we leave the moon at Taurus-Littrow, we leave as we came, and, God willing, as we shall return, with peace and hope for all mankind."

Could someone please identify - accurately and precisely - where these alleged words are recorded? They certainly don't appear in the mission transcript. I suggest they were not said, unless perhaps under Cernan's breath, and were not actually recorded. I'm open to correction on this, but I don't think I'm wrong.

From the Apollo Lunar Surface Journal:
According to Apollo 7 astronaut Walter Cunningham in his book "The All-American Boys" Gene's last words on the Moon were "Let's get this mother out of here." During the mission review in Santa Fe, Gene was surprised not to hear those words but what seems likely is that what he was remembering was his "Now, let's get off." at 188:01:25 and that, in later tellings, the wording changed to the more colorful version Cunningham quotes. I have discussed this matter with Andrew Chaikin, who is another aficionado of the audio tapes, and we agree on the interpretation given here.

It's a fun story... but whatever Gene's last words were, recorded or not, the last words spoken from the moon would still have to be Jack Schmitt, with "Three, two, one - ignition." If Gene made his comment, it would not have been during those words, made during a critical mission moment.

Seems like it is like a "fish tale", where the story gets more elaborate over time.

I agree that Young's comments about the potassium laced orange shouldn't be used, while it is fun and shows what a normal guy he is, it wasn't meant for public listening and as such should not be used as a quote.
