Charles Buckley, 86, former NASA Kennedy Space Center Security Chief, passed away early Wednesday morning, according to his family. The National Space Society's membership magazine, Ad Astra briefly described Buckley's history as part of a 2001 article describing a terrorist threat against the Apollo 17 mission: From 1960, before Alan B. Shepard's historic flight, to the space shuttle era in 1981, Buckley served as Chief of Security and Fire Operations at the nation's spaceport. Prior to that, Buckley had worked at the Atomic Energy Commission overseeing security for atomic tests in the Pacific and at the test site in Nevada. I was really sad to see this. Charles Buckley was a great man and did a great service for our space program. He was known as "007" because of his KSC badge number.I had the privilege of golfing with him and astronaut Don Williams at the Spaceweek Golf Tournament in Houston back in 1993. We had a lot of fun that day. My condolences to his family and Godspeed to 007. |

I can't count the number of pieces in my collection with his signature stamped on them. Godspeed 007. |
