Does anyone have any photographs of Jack Heberlig, who was one of the original 27 Langley engineers assigned to the Space Task Group? Electronic copies would be great -- I have not been able to find any yet.I'd also like to find other information on Mr. Heberlig's career including interviews, etc. Jack Heberlig holds the patent, along with Faget and Bland, on the contoured couches used in Project Mercury, and his long career at NASA included his role as Space Shuttle Payloads Coordination Manager at JSC. ------------------ John Capobianco Camden DE |

He lives in Charlotte, NC. He came by our office one day when we were there, and we interviewed him on our Mercury set. Very nice man. He showed me his little notebook - he was the guy sent up to PA to monitor the test to make sure a subject could survive a Mercury abort - Something like 18? 22? gs? - and in his notebook he showed me each test and the results. Cool stuff. I haven't talked to him in a few years - but he was in good health then... Mark |

I have found out a decent amount about Jack Heberlig... I got copies of several interviews including an oral history, and I was at least able to find a picture of him in an old "Look" magazine.Mark, I checked out the interview with Mr. Heberlig on my copy of the Mercury set -- thanks for pointing that out to me. I also tracked down Mr. Heberlig in NC. I spoke to him for a few minutes by phone -- he seemed to be in good health, but was not very interested in talking to me so I elected not to press the issue. I am still looking for any photos of Jack C. Heberlig if anyone has them or knows where I can find them. Thanks. ------------------ John Capobianco Camden DE | |
