I know it's a subject most space enthusiasts would just as soon forget, but whatever happened with Lisa Nowak's trial? I seem to remember it was originally set to begin earlier this year. Anyone know anything about where it stands? |

Ms. Nowak's next date in court is October 21.As a general guideline, discussion of astronauts' personal lives -- beyond public appointments and honors -- is not appropriate content for collectSPACE. I'll keep this thread open (unless it is abused) but ask that members restrict themselves accordingly. Thank you. |

"For the record" (rather than for discussion)...Florida Today: Ex-Astronaut Pleads Guilty in 2007 Attack Former astronaut Lisa Nowak has accepted a plea deal offered to her by prosecutors, pleading guilty to attacking a romantic rival for the affections of another astronaut in 2007.The plea deal will allow Nowak to avoid more jail time beyond the two days she has already served, according to Florida Today. ...Under the plea deal, Nowak must perform community service, have no contact with Shipman or Oefelein and send a sincere letter of apology within 10 days, Florida Today reported. |

Again, "for the record" (not necessarily for discussion)... - Associated Press - Aug 20, 2010
Navy panel votes to discharge ex-astronaut Nowak The Navy should discharge former astronaut Lisa Nowak, who lost her NASA job over a bizarre airport attack on a romantic rival, according to a Navy panel that reviewed her case. The panel of three admirals made the recommendation Thursday after a daylong hearing at the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville. The recommendation now goes to the Naval Personnel Command. A final decision will be made by the Secretary of the Navy. In the meantime, Nowak will continue working on the staff of the chief of Naval Air Training in Corpus Christi, Tex. - WKMG Local 6 Orlando - Aug. 27, 2010
Judge Ends Nowak's Probation Early Former astronaut Lisa Nowak is officially done serving her time on charges related to an incident with a romantic rival at Orlando International Airport.Nowak was sentenced to one year probation in November after pleading guilty to burglary charges. The judge decided Friday to end Nowak's probation three months early, calling Nowak a "model probationer."

I still can't make any sense of that whole sorry story...but then I don't suppose anyone can. All we can do is hope that Lisa Nowak maintains the help and support she needs to live a healthy and fulfilling life from here on. |

An unfortunate moment's bad judgement costing a lifetime of achievment. She's better than this and everybody knows it. |

She served her country in the U.S. Navy and NASA and that alone should never be forgotten. |

Lisa Nowak will retire Sept. 1, 2011 from the U.S. Navy with the reduced rank of commander. Assistant Secretary of Navy for Manpower and Reserve Affairs Juan Garcia issued a statement today: After reviewing all of the evidence presented to me, including CAPT Nowak's pleas in civilian court, the witness testimony provided to the board of inquiry, the harm she inflicted upon an innocent victim, as well as the more than 20 years of service of CAPT Nowak, I have approved the retirement of CAPT Nowak in paygrade O-5 with an overall characterization of service as Other Than Honorable. CAPT Nowak's conduct fell well short of that expected of senior officers in our Navy and demonstrated a complete disregard for the well-being of a fellow service member. |

Was this an expected result of the criminal case or did something else happen while serving out her Navy career? |

Unfortunately, she got more press than many astronauts who deserved it just for their space achievements. |

This is about as good an outcome as she could have expected. It sounds like more of a deal where they are doing something similar to a "plea bargain" in the military. She still will get benefits, just not at the O-6 pay scale. The "less than honorable" moniker means she essentially has been branded with something akin to a scarlet letter. She will survive though and although what she did was BEYOND stupid, she has the capacity to move beyond it and contribute many great things still in the private sector. If the Navy wanted to, they could have put fourth a court martial or degraded her to O-4 or even O-3, but that would have been just as costly to the reputation of the Navy as her and she also has kids to raise still. |

There is a good explanation of Other Than Honorable discharge here.Significantly, the OTH discharge can affect the veteran's benefits Nowak is eligible to receive. The article states that: Most veterans' benefits will be forfeited if that determination is adverse to the former service-member, such as when based on the following circumstances: ... (4) willful or persistent misconduct; (5) offense(s) involving moral turpitude ... |

Good luck to her. I'm glad they weighed her days of bad decision making against her years of exemplary service. |

I'll agree with that, proves that astronauts are human too, none of us are perfect.

This is OTH for enlisted though. Does the same apply to Officers as well? There are probably more similarities than differences, but I am curious how it shakes out with the officers. It does sound to me like the reduction to O-5 on the pay-scale is the punishment result of the OTH classification on the discharge. |
