Only nine. That's a surprise. The joint smallest class selected beaten only by the new nine (Group 2). Then again look at the legends that came from Group 2, Jim Lovell, the great John Young, etc.

Why a surprise? They don't need astronauts in the moment. A few for the ISS. No one knows how long time it will take, to fly again after the shuttle missions.

That's a very good point, but in my opinion I would have to say that once the STS program finishes there will be a quite a few veterans who decide that the wait is maybe too long and leave the program. Just my belief.
