It must have been a memorable event at the reunion of the "Thirty-Five New Guys," NASA's eighth group of astronauts, before STS-124's launch, remembering how it felt to be the 'newbies' 30 years ago, and how far they and the shuttle program have come. Any pictures/stories yet from the reunion? And a not-so-trivial question: Any chance one of the still-active members of that class could go up on the last shuttle mission? It would be a great way to close out the program... |

The photographs are still forthcoming, but one of the 16 astronauts in attendance issued a statement: It has been an honor to serve my country and a privilege to be part of the first shuttle astronaut class. This was a wonderful weekend reminiscing with my classmates, talking about the exciting future of our space program, and culminating with a terrific launch of Discovery and her STS-124 crew. — Brewster Shaw, member of the 1978 NASA astronaut class and Boeing vice president and general manager. The reunion evening itself was private, with only the astronauts and their families. |

Well, there are only two active TFNG members of the astronaut program that I know of, and of those two only one might have a shot. They are Shannon Lucid (usually acts as Capcom during the planning shift and wakeup calls) and Anna Fisher. Of the two, I don't think Shannon is considered to still be active as an astronaut though and eligable for flights. As for Anna, at last check she was pursuing a flight, but she did take an extended leave of absense from NASA for awhile before coming back and that seems to have affected her place in flight rotations. |

Brilliant photo. Thanks for posting. It doesn't show the names of the group shown in the photo on the names of the entire class, but I think they are from left to right: Dan Brandenstein, Mike Mullane, Ox Van Hoften, Pinky Nelson, Richard Covey, Lorna Onizuka, Loren Shriver, Jeff Hoffman, Brewster Shaw, Cheryl McNair, John O. Creigton, Not sure who is next in the glasses — possibly TJ Hart, Anna Fisher, Kathy Sullivan, June Scobee Rodgers. Would be great to see the entire remaining class together. |

If you click on the photo, you get the legend and the full list of names. And if you click on the large version of the photo, you can even read the name tags they are wearing. |

The NASA caption for that image does not specifically identify the people who appear in that photo. | |
